Hawaii and Home

Whew! We arrived home yesterday. For completeness, here are some pics from the island of Kauai in Hawaii, being our final stop for a few days on the way home...

The first port of call in Hawaii is always shaved ice!...

Kauai has a bucketload of chickens everywhere. It's pretty cute - they've been there for centuries and there aren't any land predators (except domestic cats)...

We were there for 3 days and visited most of the island. We did a few walks in the forests which were impressively lush and tropical...

The beaches on all islands are mix of sand and volcanic rock, as all the islands are remnants of volcanic activity (ie. there's a 'hot spot' under the crust of the earth and as the tectonic plates move, the 'hot spot' erupts in a new location - creating a string of islands). The 'big island' of Hawaii (southern most) is the current hot spot location (hence the volcanic activity on that island). Kauai is at the north end so is the oldest. Fun fact: Lord Howe Island is part of a similar (less obvious) string along a hot spot. Here are some snaps of the southern coast...

Waimea Canyon is a feature on the western side of the island. The area featured in Jurassic Park. Pretty spectacular...

More shaved ice...

Hawaii is like a snapshot of the Gold Coast mid 1970's (maybe 1960's). The roads are basic, car parks unsurfaced and so on. It's all very charming and good fun. This is our 'motel' for a few nights, harking back to that era!...

Below are some pics from our circuit along the northern coastline...

Fantastic birdlife from this lookout...

Very low key and idyllic beaches do exist (like this one) - but many are so busy its hard to even find a park. It would be very easy to spend the day here in the shade with the water at your feet. There's snorkelling at a reef just off the beach...

These hydrofoil boards with sails looked like a hoot - a different take on traditional windsurfing. The sail wasn't part of the board (I suppose there's a wrist strap or something to avoid losing it)...

I mentioned the chickens - here's a sign at the airport on the way out...

That's all folks.
