Going to California

We left NYC on Tuesday and stayed with Marian's cousin Jonathan (and his wife Carol) for three nights. We went for some great walks and drives around San Francisco, which was surprisingly mild and a little foggy. Not warm like we expected. We are now on the drive to LA to catch our plane home to Brisbane on Monday night. Today was a little exciting - as when we left Carmel heading south (for our 3 hour drive down the Big Sur), a sign said the highway was blocked and there was no way through. So, we immediately pulled over to consult our map and then the car wouldn't start. 3.5hrs later we were on our way with a new battery - going by the inland route around to San Simeon. So, we have completely missed Big Sur and the central coast. But we did have a good look down to Carmel over a day and a half. We will also have a good look at the lower section over the next 2 days. Here's some pics......

Sheep Meadow at Central Park - wow.....

Went to a free concert in Central Park - great....

Original bridge design in Central Park - fabulous....

View from rooftop of The Met....

Frank Lloyd Wright room transplanted to The Met....

Egyptian Temple transplanted to The Met....

Flaming Rosemary cocktail around the corner from our place....

San Francisco's Victorian and Art Deco architecture is fantastic. I didn't appreciate it is so widespread - across most of the city.....

Golden Gate Bridge in fog - the fog is so common they call it Karl (not sure why)....

Heron at wetland along foreshore near bridge....

In all its glory - very impressive - we went over it to get to our walk the next day....

Streetscapes...

Park and beaches on north side of bridge....

Long view of SF on way back across bridge.....

More streetscapes....

Murals in the Mission district (hispanic precinct)....

Fishermans Wharf sea lions....

Driving south toward LA, near Half Moon Bay....

Monterey - we liked the town - it has a fantastic foreshore and nice low key town centre. Note the harbour seal in the foreground....

Art Deco cinema in Main Street in Monterey.....

There are 6 golf courses around the private Monterey peninsula along the '17 Mile Drive'. One is Pebble Beach (not the one in the photo).....

Many islands are roosts for Brown Pelicans and cormorants. We also saw sea lions, harbour seals and sea otters (which are awesome to see)....

Big landscapes south of San Simeon on the way back to the coast. Note Turkey Vultures lined up on posts....

Brown Pelicans in formation on the coast at San Simeon....

Coast at San Simeon where we have spent the night. Heading to Hearst Castle this morning....

  1. Looks like are hitting all the high spots, nice work. I have never been to SF without the fog!! But most of your pics look like clear blue sky, the architecture there is amazing. Safe driving you guys.

  2. Looking forward to Hearst Castle pics—we saw an otter on his back trying to open a clam of some sort in Monterey—it is a fantastic area, full of history and old time wealth as well as the modern. Cheers Petes
