Today is our last day in Venice. We fly to Paris this afternoon. Nick and Jodie left yesterday morning and we had a great time together. Here's some pics from the last few days.....
We regularly had gondoliers passing our lounge room - here's a video....
Classical 'school' and church complex....
A ceiling of Tinteretto's....
There are many museums in Palazzo's - we went to a few....
Lagoon entry to the Arsenale from a ferry....
Site of the Venice Biennale....
Painting from 1540 in Academia Gallery showing San Marco square - exactly the same as now....
Oval staircase by Palladio in the Academia Gallery....
Having lunch on Campo San Stefano....
Rialto Bridge - so many people on it - not surprising when there are only three pedestrian bridges over the Grand Canal....
From landing edge of Peggy Guggenheim Gallery - a very modest single-storey palazzo and very busy....
A video of the view from the landing at the end of our street....
Almost a good reflection shot....
Nick on his way....
Plenty of boats in Venice....
Passing San Marco square on ferry to the Lido (another island)....
This boat cost 65m Euro with a 6.5m Euro running cost annually....
Flowers just starting to come out....
The Lido has fabulous 'Liberty Villas' and stylish late 1800's buildings.....
The private beaches are bizarre....
This is where the Venice International Film Festival is held (on the Lido) - very austere!....
We hired bikes and there were some nice lagoon paths....
One of many 'Liberty Villas' on the Lido - many had turrets as well....
Absolutely splendid π€© Venice is like a giant jewel π box full of incredibly opulent indulgence from the architecture to the art, the history to the canals, everything makes for a truly magical adventure back into history and the lives of the Venetians, their riches and ingenuity; and the power struggle between State and Church! Fascinating and strangely inspiring. At the end of each day with an Aperol Spritz in hand watching the passegiata in the many Campos (Squares) and enjoying the late afternoon light whilst contemplating what delicious pasta or secondi, or both to have for dinner, you have to give thanks to those pioneering Venetians who came up with the crazy idea to building a city in the marshes and turn it into a manmade wonderland. Thank you π Steve & Marion for hosting us. Nicholas and I had a truly fabulous time and our love of Italy and especially Venice has been rekindled. Buenissimo ππ
ReplyDeleteGreat pics and commentary as usual Steve, thanks to you and Marian for the tripπ

ReplyDeleteGrand all the photos capture the true essence of Venicexx joyx
As usual you have caught the vibe of where you are—-I feel as if I am there with you. We stayed on the Lido on our first trip their way back in time. It must have been a good feeling sitting in your apartment and watching the gondoliers paddle their way across your window. Cheers
