We're having a lovely time having a Captain Cook around Cooktown. The cemetery is very historic and has a Chinese Shrine from 1880, when there were 18,000 Chinese at the Palmer Goldfields to the west (90% of the population!). Cooktown was established to service the goldfields in 1873. There are fantastic extant historic buildings here, with fine sunsets across the Endeavor River (named by you know who). There are quirky bits like the musical boat and gun emplacement on the small RSL building. The 1889 convent is now a museum (with a cannon and anchor thrown overboard by Cooky). The Botanic Gardens are historic and very well done, and there are lovely ocean vistas a little south at Quarantine Bay. We are staying a little longer and making a trip north tomorrow. The weather is VERY gusty (trade winds) and its a little wet.
